PIPER: Merry Munchers

There's been much talk in the workplace regarding the so called filipino lesbian wedding that happened a week ago. I'm not really familiar with the story but it seems a lot of people have different reactions to the incident. As I see it, there's a group which is very much disgusted by the event and would be more than happy to condemn the couple to hell. Still there's another group that is more than happy to just not have anything to do with the situation.

Basically, I think the Filipino community is still a Homophobic community, whether it may be towards gays or lesbians. However, I do think that it is more tolerant than what it was a couple of decades ago. Here's an observation of mine: straight people would nowadays just let be anything which is gay or lesbian related. It is when such stuff is flaunted in their faces that they have a negative reaction towards it.

The incident regarding the gay marriage would not have been that bad if not for the influence of the media (read: competition) or that of the couple themselves (read: KSP). People would probably have just ignored the situation and let the couple go on with their daily lives. However, since that is not the case, I guess it simply fueled the fear and hate that was already present.

One step forward, two steps back?
